What is holding you back from achieving those Big Hairy Audacious Goals in 2013?  You are.  That’s right.  Over 90% of the people who set goals fail to achieve them because they start off “gung-ho” and never make it past the first thirty days.  Most of them don’t even last two weeks.  Why?  Because, no one holds them accountable especially themselves.

I used to be that way myself.    I would set goals at the beginning of each year and it would soon fall to the wayside.  I wouldn’t stick to them.  There were plenty of excuses.  I never seemed to run short on these.

After failing to achieve my goals a few times I learned some things.  I’ll share mine with you.

Gary’s Tips to Achieving those BHAGs

  • Time Management is a Myth.  There are only 24 hours in a day.  You can’t manage time – once you spend it – it’s gone.  You can’t get it back.  There is and always will be only 24 hours in a day.  You can’t control that.  You can however, control how, when, and where you spend your time.  Choose how you spend your time wisely.

  • Start with the End in Mind.  Stephen Covey talks about this in his book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.  How are you spending your time?  Focus on spending time in Quadrant II (Stephen Covey’s Time Management Matrix) in order to work on taking your business to the next level.

  • Plan each day. It’s hard to know how to prioritize when you’re facing a flood of seemingly-urgent tasks.  However, it’s essential to learn how to prioritize tasks effectively if you want to manage your time better.

  • Be Organized.  Set up a file management system for your office and computer.  Organize it so that you can easily find what you need.

  • Break down your Goals.  Big Hairy Audacious Goals tend to freak people out.  Breaking a BHAG into smaller, more achievable goals over a shorter period of time will help prevent this.

  • Eliminate Time Wasters.  Put a time limit on those activities that are keeping you from achieving your desired result.

  • Create Good Habits.  Focus on eliminating your bad habits and replacing them with new, more productive ones.

  • Track your results.  Use a tracking sheet as a scorecard to see how you are progressing each week.

  • Stay motivated.  Motivation is the key, but it’s not always easy, day in and day out, to find that motivation.  Celebrate those small steps you take towards achieving your goals.  Set up a time each month to review your progress.  Check in with yourself to see how you are feeling.  If necessary take some time to get yourself back in the right frame of mind.

Remember, it takes effort over time to see results so keep focusing on those smaller, achievable goals.
