I believe the children are our future

I was a guest this past Sunday on the Million Dollar Butterfly radio show and was fortunate to be interviewed by not one, but two beautiful co-hosts.  The topic of the segment was opportunity and as I was getting ready to go on a funny thing happened. As I listened to Mary McNeilly (owner of Million Dollar Butterflies) and Rylie, her thirteen year-old co-host talk about Million Dollar Butterflies and what they do, I forgot why I came on the show…

You see they were talking about a dance competition and Rylie was explaining how she had helped another young dancer get through his first dance competition.  As I watched them talk about the event the room lit up from their smiles.  I could see the pride on Mary’s face and that wonderful smile of a thirteen year old talking about how she made an impact on someone else’s life.

Why am I telling you about this?  Because we hear so many stories about all that is wrong in the world today and not enough about what our children are doing to make it a better place for all of us.   I was able to see first-hand that our future really is in good hands.  We need more people like Mary who is working with these young entrepreneurs like Riley.  They are the ones who are going to make sure the world is a good place for our children and our grandchildren.

We all need to take time out of our busy lives to make sure we are making a positive impact on these wonderful kids that will someday be the ones who turn this country back into one we are all proud of.  It is up to all of us to invest in their future – to make this world a better place for all of us.

My lesson – take time to listen to our children.  They are the ones who will give us the opportunity to be remembered as ones who made a difference in their lives.

Being on the show reminded me of one of my favorite songs by Whitney Houston.  I’ve included some of the lyrics below.

I believe the children are our future

Teach them well and let them lead the way

Show them all the beauty they possess inside

Give them a sense of pride to make it easier

Let the children’s laughter remind us how we used to be

Not only how it used to be for us, but how it will be for them in their future.

  • Thanks for the post Gary and I would have to agree 100%. As we grow in responsibility with our title of “adult” we forget a very important part of growth and that’s IMAGINATION. The beauty of being around kids is that they have great IMAGINATIONS and “NO” is not in their vocabulary. If you want to do something truly special it will always start with IMAGINATION and the bigger, bolder and out of the box your IMIGINATION is the greater your success will be…..Thanks for your blog and I look forward to learning more about your host. Mike
