Take Me To Your Leader!

As we push through the cobwebs of the dusty recesses of our memories, must of us can probably conjure up an image.  We can picture it in black and white, an ominous looking flying saucer hovering in the sky, coming to rest on the ground, a ramp being lowered and out comes the little green man or the towering robot with whirly-gigs a whizzing, or the surprisingly human looking actor portraying the invader.  When he reaches the end of the ramp and strides up to our awestruck hero and heroine they always uttered the same phrase.  “Take me to your leader!”

For those of us that can remember the thrilling science fiction of yesteryear either from first run or rerun programming.  These suspicious aliens with their ray guns and flying saucers provided us with endless hours of Saturday entertainment.  But is there value to this antiquated use of special effects other than the entertainment value?

Imagine with me if you will, you are hustling down the street one afternoon.  Hoping to make it to the local eatery, get your salad, maybe stop and get a double shot latte, make a bank deposit and get back to your office before your lunch is over.  How inconvenient would it be to be stopped by an extra-terrestrial?  Is this yet another out-of-towner looking for directions?  No, they want you to take them to your leader.

When we stop to think about it and really reflect on the request, what would we do?  Would we be more shocked by the fact this alien life form is toe to toe with us, or more stymied by our lack of ability to meet their request?  Let’s take pause and ask ourselves a few questions.

  1. Who would we take them to?-If we take inventory of our own selves, who do we look to for leadership.  Hopefully, you have thought leaders that you use for guidance.  It may be a politician, an author, or some other type of change agent that inspires us to be a better leader by putting their teaching to good use.  But, do you have someone in your life that is accessible to you that influences you as a leader.  It may be your supervisor, a pastor, or a coach.  If you were to take E.T. by the hand, who would you stand in front of, point and say, “That is my leader!”
  2. Who would bring them to you?-If I were to ask you each the question, “Do you lead others?”  More than likely I would get a rapid response of, “Yes!”  But if the truth be told, are you truly leading?  Do you have followers?  If your subordinates met Marvin the Martian at lunch, would they bring him to meet you or someone else?  This is a test of are you managing your people or leading them?
  3. Would they be disappointed and zoom back to their planet?-Are you the type of leader that is doing just enough to get by?  Or, are you offering “Wow!” type of material?  Are you a painter or are you an artist?  If someone makes the long journey to come to you looking for leadership.  Make sure that they are not disappointed for taking the trip.  Always make sure that you are giving your best effort when it comes to leading!

As always, I hope that these few words provided opportunity and insight into your personal development of leadership.  This is just one short discussion about the art of being a leader of the many more I hope to have with you.  There are so many topics that we have yet to cover, but more on that next month…
