Linchpin, Are You Indispensable? By: Seth Godin

Lynchpin-Image

In Seth Godin’s book, he discusses the importance of becoming a linchpin in your organization. To accomplish this, an individual will have to completely change their way of thinking. As a culture, we have been taught the importance of producing. Instead of producing, Godin advocates that everyone should shift to placing more prominence on creating. When an employee is creating, they are adding value. The more value someone can add the more valuable they are. Without creativity, the employee becomes interchangeable. This leaves them ill-prepared to compete against a globalized economy and workforce. However, a linchpin is so vital they cannot be replaced nearly as easily. Making creativity important is just one of the many ways that Godin demonstrates how to become a linchpin. If you are interested in learning more ways to become a better problem solver and a better leader, you should pick up a copy of this great read today!

  • Great post Phil as usual. I would add a point 1.5 that people need to have the sioivn to see if the organisation they work for doesnt accept change/new direction/suggestions; if you find that you cant become a lynchpin (UK spelling, Two nations divided by a common language and all that ) and you are not barking mad’ then the organisation is closed’.So whilst your career may have become nothing more than just a job’ , simply moving organisations to a more learning’ and open organisation can kick start it right back into a career again. Some organistions just stifle and crush creative people and you (the worker!) need to understand and recognise this and make the decision on when to cut and run’ I had a career that due to organisation changes became a job’ for 3 years, and it was 3 years of hell I now have been hunted back into an organisation that appreciates what I bring to the table. Once again I have a career and with it a new lease of life again.

    • you just finished the 4th time thgrouh the audio book and were starting it again (and knowing that you’re fulltime freelance as well), I thought I’d better check it out. The audiobook recommendation was super as well, because I have a hard time finishing books, but I burned thgrouh the audiobook over the course of a week. And it rocked my world. It made me come up with a ship date for the iPhone/facebook game I’ve been working on since last fall (June 28th, ready or not ) because Real Artists Ship and it really changed the way I look at myself and what I do and what I have to offer other people. I really appreciate it.Oh, and a sneezer is from Seth’s Idea Virus book it’s someone who spreads the word about something (like spreading it out when you sneeze). Thanks again for mentioning Linchpin and keep on making the coolness, buddy.
