So many good things can come out of taking the time to read. It may help you relax before bed. It may broaden your knowledge on a topic. It can even make you laugh or connect with your spirit on a more meaningful level. But, would you have ever thought it would make you connect with someone else?
The merits of reading for leadership development are not really up for debate. I’m just like you in the fact that on my bookcase are the latest works of John C. Maxwell, Seth Godin, Daniel Pink and so many other thought leaders whose writings influence me. A great leader must stay abreast of the contemporary theories and developments that are out there in our society today. As a leader, you should also have some of the timeless classics authored by Dale Carnegie, Napoleon Hill and others who paved the way for leaders to follow in your library. The importance of understanding the historical perspective of how people lead others can best be described by the philosopher George Santayana when he said “Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” There have been far too many advances in the science of leadership to continue with a trial and error mentality.
That being said, how does sitting down in your favorite chair with the latest bestselling business book help us connect with others? The answer is that just digesting the printed words for your own edification is not enough. Once you have reviewed it, you need to repeat it. The best way to do that is to find someone to talk about it with. Someone with who you can analyze its content, evaluate the pros and cons and compare and contrast it with other works. This is exactly what I did.
When I saw that there was a new book club in my area called Leaders are Readers, I knew it was for me. Immediately, I e-mailed the organizer of the group and let him know of my intent to be at the next meeting. When I got there, it was just he and I. He was a successful business person who had relocated and was looking for likeminded individuals to discuss the books that they were reading to better themselves. This was truly the beginning of something great. As we met over the coming months we were able to share ideas, thoughts, dreams and passions. Our beliefs about leadership development were really in synch. Because of that, Gary Patton became the Chief Connecting Officer for On Purpose Leadership.
It was our common interests in reading that caused us to communicate with each other. But, it was our shared passion in developing better leaders that caused us to connect. Because of our firm belief that Leaders are Readers, we have developed a friendship, partnership and vision for working with leaders to help them find their purpose so that they can change the lives of others. This relationship has added well more value than the few dollars I invested in the book we were originally discussing. Invest in yourself, be a better leader by being a reader!
What leadership books are you reading now?
Who do you talk to them about?
I haven’t looked forward to a training this much in years. I really appreciated the tangible tools and examples.
