Four choices that will make a difference in your business.

Saturday I had a book signing at a local book store for my new book.  I was there for four hours and it wasn’t exactly busy with people lining up to purchase my book, or the books of the three other local authors who were there.

As I sat at my table I began to look around at the various books they had lined up on the shelves around me.  I saw a copy of Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results.  I had read the book several years ago and attended a seminar on the subject when I lived in Oregon.  I decided to purchase it and spent yesterday reading the book from cover to cover.

So what you say…

It reminded me that we all have a deep source of energy, creativity, and passion that exists inside each of us, but it’s our choice whether we choose to do something about it.  You have a choice about how you choose to approach your work, even if there is no choice about the work you do.

So why are the employees of the Pike’s Place Fish Market so happy?

Because they choose to be.  We can learn a good lesson from them about how to approach your job.

There are four things they do that are worth noting;

  • Choose your attitude
  • Play
  • Make their day
  • Be present

Choose your attitude – You have the opportunity to choose your attitude every day.  It gives you a level of personal accountability and proactivity which will create energy.  Are you approaching the day with a smile?  I like to start each day by thinking about all of the things I am grateful for.  I read every morning, I listen to something positive, and I write down my thoughts about how my day is going to go.  I choose to have a great attitude for my life.

This wasn’t always the case…

I used to be bored, bitter, impatient, and blamed everyone else for my problems.  I admit – I had a bad attitude.

Play – There are so many benefits of choosing to play at work.

  • It’s energizing
  • Happy people treat each other well
  • Fun leads to creativity
  • The time passes by quickly
  • Work becomes a reward and not just a way to rewards

Make their day – Include your co-workers, customers, vendors, and everyone you come into contact with to participate in your good time.  Engage them to create some energy and good will.

  • It’s good for business
  • Serving your customers well gives you the satisfaction that comes to those who serve others

Be present – When you are present you show consideration for the other person.  It’s easy to get wrapped up in what is going on in our personal lives.  Be fully engaged in your work.  Focus on the needs of your customers and those you work with.  Focusing your attention on another person provides a constant flow of positive feelings.

Remember – the choice is yours…
